Exploring Data with Science

Learn how to conduct a Schoolyard Biodiversity Challenge. Give your students the opportunity to explore the concept of biodiversity in a tangible, local environment. You will discover tools and strategies that allow your students to contextualize the process of collecting and analyzing local plant and animal data, as well as solidify the notion that science and mathematics are intricately related. Examples will include resources and modifications for a wide variety of grade levels.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will:

    1. Employ elements of mathematics within science to build a contextual understanding of abstract concepts.
    2. Examine the importance of recording, representing and analyzing data in context.
    3. Apply critical thinking skills to examine data and potential bias.
